Lubrication oil made to MIL-PRF-7808 by Shell Oil Company under their part number 307, qualiication number
7D-1, shall not be used in engines or helicopter systems. It contains additives which are harmful to seals in
the systems.
9
DOD-PRF-85734 is a direct replacement for MIL-PRF-23699 for temperature above -40 C (-40 F) and under
no circumstance will it be used in ambient temperatures below -40 C (-40 F).
10
If DOD-PRF-85734 oil is added to any turbine engine or engine lubricated gearboxes, the engine/gearbox
should be drained and lushed with proper lubricant when it becomes available.
11
DOD-PRF-85734 shall not be used in the engines or APU. If advertently added to either the engine or APU the
system shall be drained and the correct oil added. There is no need to lush the system.
12
When starting in ambient temperatures of -34 C (-29 F) or below, lubricating oil MIL-PRF-7808 must be
used. It is not advisable to mix MIL-PRF-23699 oil with MIL-PRF-7808.
13
If the type oil being used is not available, another authorized type oil may be added. When one type oil is
mixed with another, it is not necessary to drain the system and reill with one type oil. No mixing is allowed for
cold temperature operation. For transmissions and gear boxes, when one type of oil is mixed with another, it is
not necessary to drain the system and reill with one type oil.
14
When changing from MIL-PRF-7808 or MIL-PRF-23699 oil to DOD-PRF-85734 oil (and vice versa), drain the
oil from the system and reill it with the desired oil. There is no need to lush the system before reilling.
15
DO NOT MIX OILS OF DIFFERENT SPECIFICATIONS. IF OILS BECOME MIXED, SYSTEM SHALL BE
DRAINED, FLUSHED, AND REFILLED WITH PROPER SPECIFICATION OIL.
16
Because of availability, reduced coking and better lubricating qualities at higher temperatures, qualiied
MIL-PRF-23699 oils are preferred by engine manufacturer. The preferred engine oils, per Rolls-Royce, for
MIL-PRF-23699 are Mobil Jet Oil 254 and Aeroshell 560.
17
MIL-PRF-23699 and DOD-PRF-85734 oils are not approved for use in ambient temperatures below -40 C
(-40 F). When changing to an oil of a different speciication, system shall be drained and lushed.
18
It is recommended that DOD-PRF-85734 oil be used in the transmission and tail rotor gearbox to the
maximum extent allowed by temperature limitations.
19
When outside air temperature is below -40 C, (-40 F) use MIL-PRF-7808.
20
Restricted to used between -45 C, (-49 F) to 15 C (59 F)
